Stittsville

Stittsville Community

Stittsville is a suburb located on the western border of the City of Ottawa. Originally settled by Irish soldiers around 1820, Stittsville grew in size and officially became a town in the 1850’s. The town was named after Jackson Stitt, the town’s first postmaster who helped raise Stittsville.

With humble beginnings, Stittsville originally was an outpost town with around 100 citizens and one school. Largely a farming community, residents of Stittsville relied upon the fertile soil and farmland of the area to make a living.

The Great Fire of 1870 changed a lot for those living in the Ottawa Valley, especially in Stittsville. The entire town was engulfed in flames and essentially destroyed. Slowly but surely, the town of Stittsville was re-built to what it is today.

Today, Stittsville is a sought-after suburb now officially a part of the City of Ottawa. Stittsville’s population is around ~38,000 people (2017) and is steadily growing with the increase of new construction and urban sprawl. The lasting heritage and charm of this suburb continues to attract people to the area.

A diverse variety of people inhabit Stittsville today. From young families to retirees, the area has something for everyone. With proximity to various amenities such as shopping retailers, public transportation, doctors, dentists, retirement homes, churches, recreation centers, and a fantastic selection of quality schools. Stittsville is a suburb that offers everything you could want and need.

In addition to big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, Giant Tiger, and more, Stittsville also has a variety of great local businesses such as Quitter’s Coffee and even 2 local craft breweries, Brew Revolution & Covered Bridge Brewing.

For hockey lovers, Stittsville offers two main hockey arenas and is just minutes away from the Canadian Tire Centre where the Ottawa Senators play. Tanger Outlets as well as Kanata Centrum are also nearby for anyone looking for more places to shop.

While distinctively separated from Kanata, Stittsville is still within minutes of Kanata’s booming Tech Sector and the Department of National Defense, both large employers of residents in the area.

What makes Stittsville unique compared to the rest of Ottawa is it’s tight-knit community feel and the area’s unique surroundings. As one of the few remaining areas bordering rural Ottawa, Stittsville beautifully combines the conveniences of a city with the tranquility and charm of the countryside.
